John Patrick Kenneally, born to an unmarried eighteen-year-old girl and the distinguished son of a wealthy Jewish family.Thrown out by her family his mother kept them both in modest comfort by working first as a Dance Hall Hostess and later as a high class prostitute.Called up at the outbreak of war but turned down for active service he deserted, took on the identity of an Irish building worker and joined the Irish Guards as John Patrick Kenneally. In the bloody battle before the fall of Tunis, Kenneally won the supreme award for gallantry, attacking single-handedly,a massed body of the enemy, repeating this exploit the following day and fighting on though badly wounded.Kenneally rejoined his regiment in time for the Anzio landings, was wounded again and in one instance 'took out' a German sniper in a man to man action.Posted to the Army of Occupation in Europe he enjoyed the wild, hard drinking, womanising life of post war Germany. Not ready for civilian life he re-enlisted in the Parachute Regiment.Returned to the Middle East and during the violent troubles in Palestine lead the resistance of an ill-armed village against superior Arab forces. Now a fit and surprisingly youthful-looking 70-year-old (then 1991) with a successful post war career behind him,he writes with the flair of an accomplished journalist.
